How rude is it to skip a 2nd-tier friend's baby shower without an excuse?
If you don't go to someone's baby shower because you really, really, really don't want to, and they know you are the type of person who would rather die than attend a baby shower, and you send a present along, is that super rude, or maybe sorta okay? If it matters, the girl is not one of my really close friends, but the next level down.
It is absolutely not rude, my dear. After all, you even sent along a gift, which was very thoughtful. I think we often feel obligated to attend social events, but it's almost impossible to attend every event you are invited to. Sometimes we just don't want to, and people need to respect this.
One more thing I'd like to touch on. You need provide no "excuse". Simply being 'unable to attend', should be sufficient. If the person throwing the shower pushes for a better reason, you have some license to tell them that it's a private matter. And if they go beyond that, ignore them. Some people don't get the message.
