Why did the house elves get set free after they got a hat?
Why does Hermionie make the house elves hats for their freedom, I don't understand..

Because house-elves are bound to their masters for as long as they live (I think its usually a couple of hundred years, can't really remember though) and the one way to set them free is to give them clothes. Usually house elves are ashamed to be given clothes because it is like getting dismissed or 'fired'. However, Hermione gets the impression that all house elves want to be free, because she sees that Dobby enjoy it so much.
I would have thought that Dumbledore would be the only one that could give Hogwarts house elves clothes, but maybe since they are employed by the school itself, anyone in the school could free them. This is why Hermione leaves hats around Gryffindor Tower for them, because she is trying to free them from a life of 'slavery'. Unfortunately she does not realise that house elves like being servants and that she is actually greatly offending them by trying to get them to accidentally pick up a hat (she hides them under piles of rubbish that the elves would clean).
